Wonderful book , I laughed along with Ted and cried along with Ted. As I read about the characteristics of Merle I started observing the character of my dogs more. I did skip some of the book . I wasn't interested in the habits and statistics of wolves and coyotes ,all I wanted to read the storyline of Ted and Merle.
Ted Kerasote's book on his freethinking dog Merle is filled with his extensive knowledge on the wildlife and humorous episodes with his canine buddy Merle, who reminds me of Snoopy in his independent character and individual personality. I am enthralled by the way he and Merle communicated to each other, which I find scintillating. The author has a unique way with a dog as if he were his real buddy and/or partner in performing any daily tasks together. Such human-canine bond seems primordial and endemic in an environment where the world of the wildlife is paraded within arm's reach. In sum, reading this book will enlighten you on how a human-canine relationship can evolve with lots of smiles and tears.
I hardly know how to begin. This is truly a 5 star book. When I read a book like this I want everybody to read it. Therefore, I go around telling people ----read Merle's Door. To begin, Ted Kerasote is a fine writer. He is in complete control of this book from word one. True, this is a dog story. There are 1000's of dog stories out there. I recently read that dog stories are the most popular literature today. But this is not just a dog story, it is much more. Merle is an unusual dog and Kerasote, himself, is a story. He is an outdoorsman, writes for outdoor magazines and lives in the wild. He has hiked, canoed, biked and climbed mountains all over the world. He did not want a dog. Merle choose Ted. One cold morning in Utah Kerasote, woke, in his sleeping bag, and found Merle curled up beside him. Thus begins their story. Bonding with a dog is one of live's blessings. You get an inside look at this beautiful experience as Kerasote and Merle learn to trust and love each other. His next book Pukka's Promise is also a fine book. It has a wealth of data and research about dogs. It is entirely different from Marle's Door but well written and enjoyable. One comment made about my reviews is that I write more pans than praise. This is probably true. I am incensed if my time has been spent reading a poorly written book. However, if a book has 100s of 5 stars, then I don't NEED to write. Merle's Door has 100s of 5 stars, but I needed to write. I write this because I feel so strongly I want to put my 5 stars up there too.
Merle was an independent dog and loved his mountain life in Wyoming. He roamed freely and everyone in the town loved him, “The Mayor†as they called him for his congenial ways of befriending all. I couldn’t help but get attached to him as if he were my own dog! He & the author have a symbiotic relationship, each needing the other for their fulfilled life of hunting, hiking, skiing, and being outdoorsmen. This story is well-told, with lots of research and anecdotes. I’d recommend it, but be ready for extreme attachment to this lovable pooch and his human.
I was going to give this 3 stars, because I honestly hated the ending, but decided that I should be fair, and give it four stars, because overall, this book is very thought provoking. The author not only writes about his dog, but also what his dog might be thinking, and his ideas are based on extensive research he has done on the evolution of dogs. I found a lot of ideas fascinating, and also found myself researching more extensively on some o the topics that he covered. Why not five stars? I found the author to be a bit naive about dog owners who do not offer their dogs the freedom he offers his. First, the author resides in a rural setting, which most dog owners do not. Dogs that reside in an urban or suburban environment, if treated with the same freedom, would possibly end up injured or dead, or even stolen.Second, the author implies that lack of training on the dog owner results in dogs that are disobedient. I have to disagree with him because he got lucky with Merle. Very lucky. Having been involved in dog rescue, I can assure you that few dogs who have been homeless at some point are as mentally stable as Merle. It takes years of training to undo the damage that has been done to them, and in the meantime, it's the owners responsibility to keep their dog safe. This means that they can't offer their dog a doggy door and expect their dog not to get hurt, or hurt someone else, or even just run away. Therefore they should not be judged for merely keeping their dog safe.Otherwise a great read, very much enjoyed it, and would read it again.
I have read alot of dog stories, but this one helped me mourn for a favorite pet of mine as I wasn't able to be there for her when she past. I was on assignnment in another part of the country for several weeks and although I missed her very much, I didn't realize until I read this book that I hadn't had closure of her passing.I sent the Author an email thanking him and telling him about this experience and he was kind enough to answer me.A truly wonderful read if dogs mean as much to you as they do me and Ted Kerosote.
Yet Merle’s Door is also a human-dog partnership story. A beautifully written story combining scientific canine facts with a story as compelling as Racing in the Rain. With hundreds of scientific references, Kerasote explains the behavioral science of dogs in a manner as interesting as his narration of their adventures and misadventures. The book was as compelling as any mystery I have read in the past five years. Buy a box of tissues for the last several chapters. Spoiler alert: the dog dies. Kerasote creates word pictures as if he owns stock in Kleenex.Merle is allowed to make his own decisions, within reason, for instance chasing bison is off-limits. The author and his dog live in remote Wyoming and raising a dog as he did would not work in the city, but it is a fascinating study for semi-remote settings.I highly recommend the book to anyone who loves dogs and wonder why they act as they do and is interested in a good dog and human relationship story.
