This is a fascinating, blows-your-mind story about a singular person who committed a variety of crimes under a variety of false identities. Levin did an excellent job of bringing “the Welfare Queen†and the wild tale of her life and times to the page.The problem with the book is that it’s overly exhaustive. Levin could have cut the content by a third without losing any details a reader needs to understand the topic. There’s a lot of repetition. A third of the way in, I felt worn out and had an “Ok, I get it, so why are there still over 200 pages left?†feeling.Another way in which Levin was overly exhaustive in the writing of the book is in tangential detours. Too many times, he left the immediate subject to write, for too long, about something or someone not immediately connected to the book’s stated subject. An example is how he wrote about Ronald Reagan’s part in the story. It was definitely good to bring Reagan in, because one of the foundations of the narrative is how America’s political climate of the era created, and then responded to, welfare cheaters; and Reagan not only made his stance against the system that allowed the cheating a pivotal aspect of his platform, but he constantly singled out the woman this book is about as the poster child of the problem. But for Levin to completely leave the main subject of the book to, for example, write a mini history of the race between Reagan and Gerald Ford for the 1976 Republican presidential nomination, makes the book bloated with simply too much tangential information. That’s only one instance of a constant and ultimately fatal flaw of the book.
