Should've Been Us was pure magic from the start. I was completely hooked in the first chapter. Unrequited love AND enemies-to-lovers? Sign me up. That's like book crack for me. For real, though. I devoured this story and it's safe to say it's my new Jess Bryant book. She absolutely, positively outdid herself with this one.Lulu was fabulous. I totally got her and I soooo felt her heartbreak and frustration. The way she grew and came to some startling realizations as the book progressed was on point and believable. There really is a fine line between love and hate and I think it's something that most people feel at some point in their lives. The chemistry between Lulu and Connor was palpable from the very start, even when they "hated" each other. The way Connor was constantly looking out for Lulu had me falling for him instantly. I like how he used his cocksure, devil-may-care attitude to throw off Lu at first, but it was so obvious that he was in love with her by his actions."I'm standing right in front of you. See me." Hook, line and sinker...right to the gut for this girl. This book is just one big swoonfest with the right amount of angst. The build up and tension is excruciating, but it's worth the fall. Lulu and Connor light up the pages with pure romance and steam. Icing on the cake...Connor's sexy mouth! This story is literal perfection from the first to the very last page.
Jess Bryant is a relatively new to me author, but after reading this, I can't stop reading her books! Should've Been Us, grabbed me from the first sentence and I read it in one day! These characters are so well written that you can't help but feel what they are feeling and root for love to winLulu thinks she's in love with her best friend, Derek, but he is marrying someone else. Connor has been in love with Lulu forever but they fight whenever they are in the same room. They are thrown together in a beautiful setting for the wedding and Connor is determined that he will make Lulu SEE him, finally.
I love this story. I couldn't put it down. Lulu is the best woman at Derek's wedding. She's always loved him - or thought she loved him - but he never returned those feelings. So she shows up to the destination wedding a little sad, but definitely ready to cut the cord and move on. Enter Connor. The man who has always loved her. But she never saw him through her blind love for Derek. He plans on making sure she sees him. When she does, the chemistry is off the charts. This book is sexy and sweet and a little heartbreaking. Connor is understanding and loving and super dominating in the bedroom. It was everything I was looking for. Highly recommend. Five stars. Two thumbs up. Read this book!!!
I absolutely loved this book. It had me alternately laughing and teary eyed from the beginning. Lulu has had feelings for her best friend since they were little and now she has to be his “best woman†in his destination wedding.Lulu figures she will drink through the wedding festivities, but Derek’s best friend Connor has other ideas. Lulu and Connor can’t be in the same room together without arguing. But could Lulu have things all wrong? It takes some hard truths and opening her eyes to what is really going on, but could Lulu get her happily ever after? I absolutely loved this story and can’t wait for the next one!
The enemies-to-lovers trope is one of my favorites because, when done right, all that animosity leads to heavily charged banter and I love me some clever banter with steamy subtext.Should've Been Us has that delicious wordplay in spades. It's a joy to read (even when it's a little bit sad). Highly recommended!
Should've Been Us is part of the Fate, Texas series and my second read from Jess Bryant, the first one being Stay a Little Longer, which also belongs to the same series and which I originally thought was the first in said series, but more on that later. This is the story of Lulu Nichols and how she gets over the one guy she's been in love with forever. When she agrees to be the "best woman" at her best friend's wedding, Lulu knew standing by Derek Harper's side should be an honor, and it was, but it was also torturous considering she would have preferred standing across from him exchanging vows of forever instead. She knows it's time for her to move forward, that Derek will never love her in a romantic sense, that his heart already belongs to his bride-to-be. Being paired up with Connor Shaw for the all the pre-wedding and wedding festivities, however, was not what she had in mind but maybe going toe-to-toe with him will be enough of a distraction. The thing is, Connor isn't looking to be just a distraction for Lulu; he wants to be hers forever.Remember I mentioned this being part of a series and how I thought my first Jess Bryant read was the series starter? Well, it wasn't until I was reading this new book that I suspected I was missing something--the "something" being two previous books in the series (yup, books that came out BEFORE the one I though was the first one) plus crossover characters from another author's series. I know that this is promoted as a series of standalones, but yeah, there's a reason why the books are all part of ONE series, and well, I did feel a wee bit lost at times. That being said, I did love Connor, who I must say was the best thing about the book. He loved Lulu unconditionally, and to be honest, the guy deserved an award for how devoted he was to her. Lulu, on the other hand, well, I ended up calling her Cuckoo Lulu. While I'd consider Connor's feelings for her devotion, Lulu's for Derek was more delusional. But again, Connor was what made Should've Been Us worth reading. It gets 3.5 stars and may be checking out the first two Fate, Texas books. ♥
