"The Mango Seed Doll by Karlene J. Froling is the story of Salon who was born in a tree covered by leaves, and hung there with her brothers and sisters. She was removed from the tree when she was big enough and placed on a tray with others. Salon was no longer a part of the tree now but was still inside her cocoon. Inside the cocoon she was covered by a firm yellow-orange pulp that could be eaten. They were all removed from the tray and placed in a basket. Salon waited nervously in the basket, wondering what would become of her. She was finally removed from her cocoon and left on a bench. The sun felt good. A little girl, KayLynne, picked her up from there and named her Salon. She took Salon home, gave her a makeover and made her look like a doll.The story tackles the topic of acceptance, tolerance, self worth, and friendship in a very unique and creative way. The illustrations by the author are lively, imaginative, colorful, and breathe life into the story. I like the way she created a character out of a mango seed and gave it a personality of its own. The Mango Seed Doll is an excellent book for storytelling and read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries because of the wonderful messages it conveys, and parents can use it at home for bedtime storytelling and reading sessions. I am sure children will be encouraged to create their own mango seed doll after reading this story. It took me forty years to realize that what had been told to me was just lies. I have since rejected the lies I believed. And now that I have accepted who I am and love ME, I am the happiest I have ever been!Help your children to stay strong in the face of similar lies. Teach them to reject the negative and hurtful, and to embrace the positive about themselves. You are STRONG, you are BRAVE, you are BEAUTIFUL.You are SMART, you are LOVE, you are POWERFUL.You are UNIQUE, you are FUNNY, you are TOUGH.You are KIND, you are POLITE, and you are ENOUGH.Be perfectly imperfect YOU!

I enjoyed reading this book and absolutely loved all of the beautiful illustrations offered throughout. The book is a great read for all young children of various age, culture and ethnicities because it skillfully tells an interesting story to young curious, learning minds and offers a critical and much valued compassionate way to broaden the perspective of our future leaders. Thank you

A sweet story w/beautiful illustrations that delivers several positive messages. Encourages children to accept their uniqueness and recognize it as their strength! Delivers a lesson on acceptance and friendship. One of my favorite messages is the part about encouraging creativity in children! Going forth with an idea that is out of the box, act upon it and be proud of it, as in creating a doll out of a mango seed! Highly recommend it!

I found this book to be quite interesting and unique. It explores the themes of diversity, love and friendship in a way I've never seen before. The author was also careful in telling a story about differences without being too preachy. It also shows how one can use something seemingly useless to create a thing of great value. In this age of high technology and low self-confidence and esteem, this book can also help to teach young readers self worth and acceptance. The activities and mango information chart at the end of the book were useful.

This is the perfect story about being happy with who you are. It is beautifully illustrated and told from the viewpoint of a discarded mango seed. You'll love the extra activities inluded at the end of this story. Facts about the delicious mango are also included.

As an Educator, I highly recommend this book as a tool to teach children that unique is good and beautiful. I adore how the Author also includes a step by step instruction for the children to make their own "Mango Seed Doll."

I really enjoyed this book. It was adorable. The illustrations were lovely! I highly recommend, it has a moral lesson, and it is written well!

This sweet story is a wonderful way to teach children about acceptance. The storyline deals with bullying and how important it is to stand up for yourself. The directions to make your own Mango doll is a great idea.. I really enjoyed reading this story.

Cute Illustrations and such a great lesson. Would definitely recommend it for kids. My daughter loves mangoes so she was intrigued by the cover.
