I have been involved in computing for over thirty-five years. To give you some idea of what this means, I started in the days prior to PCs when punch cards were king and "big iron" mainframes ruled the roost. A good chunk of my time has involved direct contact with and support of clients. For example, back in the early 80's I was teaching classes on how to set up relational database applications. And so, I've always been on the lookout for tools that would make it easier for clients to learn how to do things for themselves. Everyone has a different learning style and so not one style is perfect for everyone. However, if you are the kind of person who can read through the text and will spend the time to do the exercises, then this book is a great introduction to Microsoft Access 2010. Of course, it's a big help if you have someone who can answer a quick question or two in case you get stuck. No book is perfect but it rates five stars in my opinion for its readable style and detailed instructions. I learn far more through working with a new tool than by just watching someone talk about it in a class. If this is your learning style, then I can strongly recommend this book for your consideration.

Great book. Shows everything in detail and has great examples to follow along. I wish it talked about the VB parts a little better, but it is a great intro book.

The book is very good. It walks you through each step and is very easy to follow for new comers to Access. I have the same book for Word and Excel and their both just as good as this one.

This textbook has a great layout, is written in clear language, and has step-by-step directions.However, it fails in its instructional design. Meaning, you can go through the whole book and not be prepared to apply much of it. The exercises and assignments are like real-life scenarios, but its fault is in too much hand-holding through too much material. I would prefer to know "less" and be confident in what I do know how to do.Sometimes you cannot even figure out what the end goal is for the step-by-step instructions, until you realize, "Oh, I just need to rearrange labels so they line up and are readable." Wouldn't it be better for a student to figure out their own idea of what an organized layout is, instead of everyone painstakingly recreating the same form? By the end of the textbook, the learning expectations should have evolved.I would not recommend this book for personal study or an online course. It might, however, still be ok when paired with a lecture/lab and different assignments.
