About the Author

ROB MARTIN has been involved in Christian ministry since his conversion in 1976. He first served as the editor of a Christian publication and then for six years with the Orange County Rescue Mission, Orange County, CA, before becaming General Manager of Fieldstead & Company, a private philanthropy of Howard and Robert Ahmanson. He later served as Executive Director of First Fruit, Inc. and has been with this organization in a full time capacity since 2009, serving ministries and colleague foundations as a coach on a variety of organizational issues. Rob was educated as a journalist, and spent his formative career years in newspaper work. He and his wife, Bev, have raised three daughters and reside at Useless Bay on Whidbey Island, WA.

Rob Martin has succeeded in ‘When Money Goes On Mission” to give us a much-needed rethink about the proper and God-honoring place of money in Christian mission. Since the early 20th century money has progressively climbed up from its proper place as a humble servant to become a master and definer of mission strategy and the structures that serve it.In spite of the good will and well-meaning intentions of givers — whom Martin describes and honors in his book — the subtle power of money-as-master paradigm has shaped how we think about, strategize and prioritize our kingdom relationships. Much has been written to alert us of the dangers of managerial missiology, a powerboat mindset that is at odds with our sailor’s heart, of the corrupting influence of money on the mission field (and at home, by the way). In my 40 years serving in the gap between mission field and sending churches and foundations, I have seen many noble plans reshaped and mangled by the tyranny of a misguided pursuit of funds.No one to my knowledge knows better than Rob Martin the agonies and joys of serving the global church from the angle of financial resourcing. I have got to know and appreciate Rob through fortuitous encounters in Cairo, Budapest, Chiang Mai, and an occasional international airport encounter somewhere on the globe as well as at home. He knows the mission field from inside as much as any non-resident can. He has been diligent and intelligent (which defines faithfulness to me) in learning all he can from the people he serves on the field and at home.His book helps us return money back to its proper and God-honoring place in Christian mission thinking and practice.
