In his follow-up to the highly successful and widely-acclaimed The Sorrow Hand, Dwight Holing and Nick Drake are back at again in The Pity Heart. This time, Nick is not only battling a new crop of bad guys but also battling the ghosts of his past.What impressed me most about this second outing for Dwight/Nick in The Pity Heart is the emphasis on Native American folklore and mysticism and the way that it figures into the story. I found this novel to be more philosophical (don’t worry folks, there’s plenty of action to keep you riveted!) as well as a chance to get to know Nick better. Nick is a much more developed and well-rounded character than he was in The Sorrow Hand. Part of this, I believe, is Holing being more comfortable with the character and giving him this room to grow within the story.In The Sorrow Hand, we learn that Nick is still battling PTSD and the ghosts from the Vietnam War; in The Pity Heart though, Holing bests himself with delving deep into Nick’s life and those ghosts.As I said, there’s plenty of action and bad guys to keep Nick and Pudge on their toes that’ll keep readers turning the pages. The Pity Heart continues the story of Nick Drake and other characters introduced in The Sorrow Hand. While the story stands alone, it proved a more richly enjoyable experience, having first read the earlier work.Nick is a wonderfully complex character. He is a combat hero haunted by guilt and post-traumatic stress, who is also struggling to overcome addiction. He works in a somewhat self-imposed exile as a wildlife warden in a remote area of Oregon. His extensive military training make him somewhat overqualified for the job; however, the vast area he must patrol alone and his varied responsibilities make his job challenging. The beauty of unspoilt nature is juxtaposed against the horrendously ugly deeds of which some men are capable.Nick has his hands full in The Pity Heart, contending with poachers, large-scale cattle rustling, illegal weapons, a murder investigation, and the possible cover-up of illegal shenanigans by an ambitious Air Force major.Author Dwight Holing paints the rugged landscape, the varied fauna and flora, the rugged individualism of the people, the history and customs of the local Paiute Indians and other aspects in vividly realistic detail. It’s an easy, engaging read, from start to finish.

I was captivated with how the terrain of lakes and landing strip plains and their inhabitants wove into the spiritual terrain Nick Drake passed through towards healing. The two rides on Wovoka. The obsidian for his medicine pouch. The "two snakes" configuring rivers but also Carla's Nursing Corp insignia. The pity shown to AJ. The Paiute characters often served as translators in this respect for both Nick and readers. This book offers a solid mystery story, a journal of the labors of healing, and native American stories intrinsic to understanding Nick's progress, and well, everything.One note: I particularly enjoyed the story of how young Nagah got his name. I also regret there's no live soundtrack for the really great songs that are mentioned! Thanks, Dwight Holing: this book goes on my Worth Re-reading list.

A great follow up to The Sorrow Hand. Nick is still battling his own demons while searching for a poacher, looks for why a pilot ejected from a plane after landing in a lake and what happened to a nurse who helped him when he was in Walter Reed. He has help from Pudge, the local deputy and November, who helps him learn from the Paiute legends and folklore, which helps him with the mysteries he has to solve and learn more about himself. The story is well written and grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go. The characters, though still being fleshed out, are well developed and likable. Can't wait for more about Nick and friends.

Once again with “The Pity Heart” author Dwight Holing demonstrates his ability to create a powerful and moving story.Remember, and realize, this is a work of fiction and read it as such and you will enjoy it even more.No spoilers here (there never will be in one of my reviews), and I recommend you read “The Sorrow Hand” befor reading this one the 2nd in the series. It too was a 5-Star read.Congratulations Mr. Holing I’m read for book #3!

The Pity Heart is a great follow up to The Sorrow Hand. I was already invested in all the characters and it was great to spend more time with them. Nick Drake is a Vietnam Vet dealing with PTSD and getting as far away from people as possible by becoming a wildlife ranger in Eastern Oregon. We learn more about Nick's experience in Nam and how it continues to haunt him. All the characters are very well drawn. I love local sheriff Pudge and his daughter, Gemma. Nick is dealing with multiple mysteries and, in the process, delving deeper into the local Native American community and their tribal lore. Like the previous book in the series, it's beautifully written, pulls you right in, and keeps you guessing to the very last page.

I had just finished reviewing Craig Holing’s first Nick Drake novel, the Sorrow Hand when I noticed that there was a sequel already. After reading it, I’m convinced that this character Nick Drake is a keeper. Mr. Holing’s writing is definitely smoother and more on top in the second book and his characters are taking on more and more depth and meaning. He successfully blended the mystery of a downed pilot, with the annoying problem of a persistent and thoroughly unpleasant poacher. What can I say? the characters feel real and their humanity appeals to mine. Maybe because I’m a baby boomer and the Vietnam era was a significant part of my youth, maybe because I loved riding horses and riding motorcycles, or maybe just because I like the guy; Nick’s world appeals to me and I look forward to seeing what happens to him in Oregon. It is encouraging when the second book of a series surpasses the first.Next.
