I thought this was her choice of the best from her on going series of Horror anthologies each year. Was I wrong. It almost seems she picked the worst stories for the series to give them a new life. I almost gave up after the first 7 stories. Then came Laird Barron's "In a Cavern, in a Canyon", by far the only really good scary story in the whole book. Definitely not "The best of the best".

BIG DISAPPOINTMENTIt’s rare that Brilliance Audio has ever released mp3 or other audiobooks that have bad sound quality, however when they released the audio edition to The Best Of The Best Horror Of The Year. I was excited, finally getting some the stories from the last ten volumes, including Simon Bestwick’s The Moraine, Black and White Sky By Tanith Lee and Peter Straub’s The Ballad Of Ballard and Sandrine, I was going to get new audio horror stories for my ever growing audio library.Read by both Tim Campbell and Emily Sutton-Smith, I purchased it in mp3 edition and had to wait for seven weeks, got it finally two days after thanksgiving. When I started to listen to the mp3, I notice that all of the audio segments read by Campbell did not sound fantastic. Each story sounded hallow, and not digitally remastered. The audio samples performed by Sutton-Smith are excellent as if someone that did all of her segments knew how to re-do her audio samples in the best quality of sound.Campbell’s editions weren’t clear or had good sound quality. I was very disappointed with this, the Emily editions were great, the Campbell ones were not.Hope The Eleventh Volume to The Best Horror Of The Year has good quality, since Brilliance Audio has released great mp3 audiobooks with great sound.

This collection is indicative of the problem with all types of short stories nowadays. The writing quality is excellent, but the content of the stories is not. In some of these tales, the horror element seems like something that is just thrown in or happens off-handedly. I won't give the collection less than four stars, but it is not the best in my opinion.

AWESOME BOOK

I haven't read any of Ellen Datlow's collections, but decided I'd try this one. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I really enjoyed the stories. There was enough variety – in tone, in subject, in length – to keep me interested throughout.Allochthon (Livia Llewellyn), This Stagnant Breath of Change (Brian Hodge), Black and White Sky (Tanith Lee), and the slim No Matter Which Way We Turned (Brian Evenson) were some of my favorites.I'll definitely be going back through Datlow's previous anthologies!

This book was absolutely horrible. I couldn’t find one decent story. Like another reviewer said. It was like the author chose the worst of the worst short stories and put them all into this anthology. I did not find one story entertaining or remotely scary. In fact most of them I could hardly finish. After the first 10 I couldn’t torture myself any longer and gave up!
