Review

Admiration for Holly FitzGerald’s RUTHLESS RIVER  "The 'survival' tale has long occupied a storied corner of the travel writing genre, from The Worst Journey in the World to In the Heart of the Sea. Holly FitzGerald's Ruthless River instantly takes its spot among these giants ... In this world of water, the FitzGeralds struggle in vain to find their way back to the river's current ... The couple endures, maintaining hope and affection for each other. It's this that elevates Ruthless River above the typically heroic tale of survival. In simple, unsentimental terms, Holly FitzGerald has given us a most unlikely love story."--Andrew McCarthy, The New York Times Book Review“If you built a survival-adventure book in a laboratory, you’d end up with Ruthless River . . . A completely unexpected real-life thriller. —Jon Foro, Omnivoracious (Best Biographies & Memoirs of June)   “Adventurous.” —Outside Magazine (The Best New Survival Books)   “A harrowing survival saga . . . In vivid, absorbing prose, FitzGerald unspools a story that moves from optimism, energy, and a thrilled sense of adventure to abject fear and near starvation.” —Nina MacLaughlin, The Boston Globe   “Both travel memoir and shocking adventure story, like a real-life Survivor or Naked and Afraid . . . A powerful story about survival, love, and faith in the face of impossible odds . . .  Unputdownable . . . absolutely fascinating.” —Katie Lawrence, Library Journal   “Vivid and consistently compelling . . . An absorbing tale of survival, love, and the generosity of people who helped save their lives.” —Kirkus Reviews   “A detailed, high-stakes debut memoir . . . FitzGerald weaves in the stories from their past with palpable, evocative details of their daily struggles with starvation, strong currents, and despair, all while the couple’s love, self-knowledge, and faith deepen . . . Recommended for fans of survival narratives, coming-of-maturity stories, and travelogues from off the beaten path.” —Louisa Whitfield-Smith, Booklist   “Adventure, romance, danger, salvation—all in a story that’s beautifully told and, incredibly, really happened. Pick up Ruthless River, but be careful. You might find it hard to put down. This is one of those memoirs you won’t soon forget.” —Damon DiMarco, author of Tower Stories: An Oral History of 9/11   “There are lots of adventure stories out there, lots of romances, lots of spiritual memoirs, but I know of no other book that combines all three genres with such grace and beauty. Ruthless River is thrilling—edge-of-your-seat, hold-your-breath thrilling—but it’s so much more than that. It’s a meditation on how we find meaning and the strength to survive in an impossible circumstance, and one of the most tender love stories you’ll ever read. I love this book.” —Kerry Egan, author of On Living   “The best real-life survival tale since Cheryl Strayed’s Wild . . . A jaw-dropper of a memoir . . . A mind-blower of a debut . . . A survival tale so extreme, so insane, so bizarre, that Hollywood couldn’t make it up. It’s stranger than fiction.” —Lauren Daley, South Coast Today   “A spectacular, frightening, and amazing odyssey that opens a window into the soul. I loved this book; I couldn't put it down.” —Lynne Cox, author of Swimming in the Sink   “One of the great survival tales. An almost unbearable story told with a physical and emotional intensity that draws the reader in, not just as witness, but as virtual participant. It’s an exhausting, painful, inspiring read.” —Michael Palin, author of Traveling to Work

A shocking tale of how not to spend your honeymoon...or any other time for that matter, without the experience of a river guide while rafting down an Amazon tributary.Set in 1972, this is Holly Fitzgerald’s reminisce of adventures gone bad. With one mishap after another, Holly and her husband eventually find themselves rafting down the Madre de Dios River...soon to be swept away into a jungle quagmire. Survival is now imperative. Her tales of day to day existence for nearly four weeks are riveting...how to get food, fend off the relentless insect attacks and stay focused physically and mentally. Truly astonishing. At times can be somewhat sappy and overdone but nonetheless a good survival story. And for a more recent journey of this river, may I suggest Paul Rosolie’s “Mother of God” which takes place in the western part of this same tributary.

When 40 years ago I first learned of this incredible journey on the Madre de Dios, the tale had the glamor and excitement of an Indiana Jones adventure with plenty of excitement and lots of close calls. At 25 I was just delighted and relieved to hear of the happy ending as, at that age, I had no experience to grasp the horrors and anguish that Holly and Fitz FitzGerald had actually lived through and survived.Today, reading Ruthless River, I was immediately pulled in, indeed like the quicksand Holly so narrowly escaped. It was a non-stop, riveting read for me the first time around, wanting to plow through page after page to discover what happened next. And, now, on the second read I find I am taking my time, relishing Holly’s prose, actually feeling and seeing Fitz and Holly on this journey through her eyes and through her stunning choice of words and descriptions. As a bonus, Ruthless RIver is a love story of the most profound kind, where this young couple found courage, faith and hope in each other to persevere through the grueling challenges. As one day blends into the next , it becomes clear that it is Holly and Fitz’s relationships with each other and the memory of family and a future that keeps them going.

I have always been drawn to movies and books, real life stories, with settings in the jungle. I was intrigued when I saw this book and bought it. It did not disappoint. I was drawn in to the story and narrative by the end of the first chapter. The couple on the journey, newlyweds from Connecticut, had saved to go on this several month trek through South America, with the highlight reaching the Amazon River. The couple was quite inexperienced when off the beaten path and unfortunately, after several months enjoying their journey experiencing South America, they began making their way toward the Madre de Dios which would lead them to the Amazon River. This is where all their woes began. So as not to spoil the story, suffice it to say I could barely stop reading, yet I wanted to because I did not want to finish the book. Many of you have had that same feeling, right? It is one I don't get too often.Holly, the wife, is the author, and at times I had to remind myself that yes, they did survive being lost. It was that intense. There was starvation, of course, and plagues not unlike in the Bible, descending upon them at different times, some unending. Yet, somehow, man and wife were courageous, had a deep love for one another and kept a sliver of hope alive. They WERE rescued in the nick of time!I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is a very enjoyable read.

Wow. This is an incredible true story that reads very easily and kept me hanging on to see how it would end. The book never would have been written if the author hadn't survived, but it wasn't clear whether or not her husband would also make it out alive, as she recounts the harrowing mix of good and bad luck that led them to become adrift on a primitive raft on a South American river in the 1970s. The book is full of interesting tidbits about nature and south american culture -- and even taught me something I never knew about the presence of quick-mud bogs in Connecticut (where I grew up). I highly recommend this book. A harrowing true story that's full of beauty and kindness, as well.

Sometimes we wonder if we humans are somehow mysteriously connected. I have asked questions like does God really watch over us? In 1977 I found myself stranded deep in an Ecuador jungle, totally lost. Had it not been for the kindness of a remote village school teacher I would have been lost forever. This book brought up so many memories for me and deep emotions. I am reminded of how powerful love is despite all adversity. I am ever grateful to the kindness of humble people everywhere. I am ever in awe of humans who have survived in areas of the world that we in modern society would not last more than a minute. Thank you for writing this book. Hurray for travel and adventure and life!

Did not put this down for two days. Spellbinding, and at the same time almost unbelievable how this couple survived their ordeal. No spoilers here. You have to read it. It makes me never want to travel outside the U.S., that's for sure. Not like I would at this point. Those of you who enjoy non fiction will love this. I recommended it for my book club, too.

I am currently reading this book. The beginning kind of dragged .It is very interesting now. The two charactors have soo much courage and determination. It becomes dangerous and terrifying. It keeps you in suspense. Read this book. You wont be sorry.!!!

I gave this to a friend. She loves adventure and has spent time on rivers in the Amazon. I wouldn't have passed this along if I hadn't found it affecting and special. Holly doesn't shy away from describing the brutal experience, but she never feels sorry for herself. I can't imagine living through this experience, but because she did, she has plenty to teach us all about perserverence and taking chances.
