This is the second time that I have gifted this book to a grandson. Using the basics in "Clueless" as a foundation, the first teen recipient has moved up to a high level of multi ethnic cooking. The 10 year old grandson that recently received his copy has no trouble following the well written and explained recipes. I am pleased that the recipes are "from scratch" - no box of this and can of that. Considerable general kitchen and shopping information is also included. This is a great book for all beginner cooks.
Okay, first off, it has decent recipes. But they aren't any different than you'd find in any standard beginner cookbook. But what really annoys me is the author seemed to think using a goofy font and repeatedly using the word "whatever" is all it takes to make it appeal to teens. There are no pictures with the recipes. None. Its black and white with goofy font. And the word whatever, a lot. Overall, it is not a bad cookbook, and its not really worth the hassle for me to ship it back. I'll still give it to the 12 year old. But I don't think it is really that helpful to a new cook, as sometimes you really do just need pictures to understand how to cut things, or put something together.. and to hold a teenager's attention. That said, "Teens Cook: How to Cook What You Want to Eat" is a cookbook I ordered at the same time, and it is excellent.. lots of pictures and tips and explainations. I'm sure the 12yr old will really enjoy that one, and maybe after he gets some skills he can find some recipes in this book to try out. I will say this book has MORE recipes than most "teen cookbooks" I found, but for someone learning to cook, pictures are a big deal IMO.
This is a great book for anyone but especially for teenagers. I used this book in my Family and Consumer Science classroom, and we loved the easy to make great tasting recipes. I gave copies of this book for graduation last year to all the students I had in class and they loved it. This book is fun, easy to read and full of practical tips and yummy recipes that teach kids they can make the classics they love from scratch!
I was drawn to this by the name and the drawing on the cover - both of which I believe are "deceiving." I bought it for my 13 y.o. son, who is only a bit interested in cooking but is truly totally clueless about it. I read reviews but apparently I already had a bias of what I expected. I expected quite a few pictures (even if they were just drawings) and there are basically none. I expected easy, quick things that typical teenagers would be drawn to. But things like pineapple upside-down cake, bread pudding, fettuccine with asparagus, eggplant pasta sauce, cooking a turkey, lamb stew, mushroom risotto... Really?! Unless I'm really out of touch, I don't believe these are recipes most teens would be drawn to.With that said, I think this is a neat little cookbook for maybe a newlywed or someone just starting out in doing some "serious" meal preparation, beyond microwaving and fast foods. There's a lot of good basic information -- but much more than your average teen would care about. It would be great for a teen who has a pretty strong interest in really learning about foods and cooking, but most teens that already have that interest are not "clueless in the kitchen."So, I'd give it more stars if it were what I expected, but it just isn't.
So, my son... Yes, I said MY SON... sat and read this cover to cover on a camping trip last summer. It is terribly funny. When we got home, he insisted on learning to cook. I'm still trying to figure out if I intended for him to be this inspired.
I give this cookbook to everyone who tells me that they wish they knew how to cook- I use so many of the recipes still, and refer to the basics it taught me all the time. The food is consistently delicious and everyone I know who has used it loves it. I especially love the menu planning suggestions in the back!
I enjoyed this cookbook more than my college boy. Easy to read , small book, decent recipes and very informative. Great for a beginner!
This item was purchased as a Christmas gift for a young friend. I was very pleased with it, as I'm sure she will be. She is a beginner cook and this book is extremely informative. I was very happy with it, also.
